Fifteen students in grades 4-8 faced their parents and others during the hour-long District Spelling Bee at the Middle School on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

The bee went through six rounds before arriving at the two students who will represent Scotia-Glenville at the Regional Spelling Bee on Monday, March 15 at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady.

The two students from Scotia-Glenville are Sophie Calderon, grade 5 at Sacandaga Elementary, and Teddy Meiners, grade 7 at the Middle School. Sophie correctly spelled the word "hysterical" and Teddy correctly spelled "luxury" in the final round of the bee.

The winner of the Regional Bee wins an expense-paid trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in May.

Some of the words were not easy ones – quarantine, affiliation, competitive, encore, denominator, dynamite, apology, missle, straightforward, cabbage – but each student gave it their best.

Ann Comley, moderator for the bee and principal at Lincoln Elementary, reminded the students that they are all winners for having reached the district-level bee. Each competed in rounds of spelling bees at their schools before being names the top students from that school.

Below are the students who participated in Tuesday's bee. The elementary schools also named alternates, who would have participated if needed in case another student was absent. None of the alternate students participated on Tuesday.
