What's Happening?

The NYSSMA registrations are now open for students to apply. We will be participating at the May Festival May 7-8 at Broadalbin-Perth Schools and June 4-5 at Shenendehowa. All students auditioning for all state must participate at the May Festival unless they are auditioning on a jazz instrument.

The Middle School will have two concerts during the month of January. The first concert is on January 20 and will feature the 7th grade band and chorus. It will also feature the combined 7th and 8th grade orchestra. This concert will take place at 7 PM in the middle school auditorium.

The next concert will be the 6th grade concert on January 26. This concert will feature the band, chorus and orchestra. The concert will take place at 7PM in the middle school auditorium.

The 8th grade band students will be going to the high school to learn about the high school band program on January 22 from 9:45-11 AM. They will have an opportunity to visit the music wing, sit in on a high school band rehearsal and ask both Mrs. Atchley and the students about the program at the high school. This is part of the mentor program that we provide for 8th grade students who may wish to continue to be part of a performing group at the high school during their freshman year. The 8th grade orchestra will be involved in a similar program later in the spring.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Scotia-Glenville Central School District Fine Arts department is multifaceted. Through the study of the arts, students will develop a language for expression, skills for creative literacy, as well as cognitive, emotional social and psychomotor skills. The study of the arts provides students with an outlet for their creative abilities and individuality. Students will develop a life-long appreciation for the arts, as well as the integration of the arts into their daily lives. Students will have exposure to cultural forms. They will learn to balance the arts with other life experiences. Through the arts, students will be reminded of the beauty of the world. The Fine Arts department provides service for all curricular needs of students, to enhance their intellectual capabilities. Historical context and literacy (in art, music and language) are all important components of the program. The New York State Standards for the Arts are the guidelines through which our mission is channeled
