Three seats on the Board of Education will be decided during school district voting May 18.

The seats now held by Colleen Benedetto and Margaret Smith are up for election this year. As well, the final year of the vacant seat formerly held by Brian McCann, who resigned in the fall, will be filled May 18.

The three candidates who receive the most votes are elected. The candidate with the least votes among the three will take the vacant seat immediately and face re-election in May 2011.

Board members, who are unpaid, serve three-year terms. They are involved in shaping the annual budget as well as administering policies, procedures and other activities of the school district.

Candidates must collect signatures from residents of the Scotia-Glenville community. This year, they will need to collect 41 signatures by the deadline of April 19.

Candidates for school board must be at least 18 years old; qualified voters in the school district; able to read and write; and a resident of the district continuously for one year prior to the election.
